MISSION KI - National initiative develops AI testing approaches and two AI centers

Strengths in AI research - and then? With the National Initiative on Artificial Intelligence and the Data Economy, the German government wants to support the growth of trustworthy, marketable AI applications in Germany.

Today, the initiative announced a consortium that is developing uniform AI quality standards as the basis for a German AI seal of quality. The decision was also made to set up AI centers in Berlin and Kaiserslautern. The national initiative is given a short name as a leverage project: “Mission KI”.

MISSION KI aims to increase Germany's pace in the development of “AI Made in Germany”. Germany stands for quality, a strong industry and outstanding AI research - and is set to become a leader in the realization of quality-assured AI applications

Quality seal takes AI out of the black box

Until now, AI has been seen by many as a black box: what exactly AI solutions do with data and, above all, how they arrive at their results and decisions often remains unclear. MISSION AI will develop and test AI quality and testing standards and define a voluntary AI seal of approval on this basis. To this end, the initiative is pooling the expertise of renowned standardization and testing organizations. Partners of the consortium are:

  • AI Quality & Testing Hub
  • Fraunhofer IAIS
  • PwC
  • TÜV AI.Lab
  • VDE
  • CertifAI

The AI seal of approval creates the previously missing basis for private and industrial users to trust AI applications and use them with confidence. This strengthens the marketability of AI applications and thus the competitiveness of German companies.

Kaiserslautern and Berlin receive AI centers

MISSION KI is building AI quality and innovation centers that create a testing and experience environment for trustworthy AI. The first centers are located in Berlin and Kaiserslautern. The AI center in Berlin is aimed at anyone who wants to find out more about AI and try out applications. It will be a place to meet and discuss how and within what limits AI should be used.

In Kaiserslautern, MISSION KI wants to create a contact point for founders, start-ups, SMEs and large companies that want to bring AI from research to application. The AI Center Kaiserslautern gives them access to cutting-edge research and AI testing environments - thanks to a cooperation with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), which is based there. An AI showroom and an AI test environment are to be created at the DFKI in Kaiserslautern in order to make AI tangible for the public and to test and further develop AI test approaches in real use cases and establish an AI quality label.

This is MISSION KI

MISSION KI is the National Initiative for Artificial Intelligence and Data Economy. The lever project of the German government's digital strategy aims to strengthen digital competitiveness. The initiative pursues three goals: MISSION KI aims to expand the database for AI innovations and to network data spaces across sectors and national borders for this purpose. MISSION KI aims to create transparent AI quality and testing standards and, building on this, define a voluntary AI seal of quality in accordance with German and European values. To this end, MISSION KI will establish AI quality and innovation centers, i.e. testing and experimentation environments and public experience spaces. MISSION KI aims to support the growth of AI innovations. To this end, MISSION KI brings investors together with AI founders and companies and develops non-financial measures that make it easier for researchers to establish spin-offs.
