MISSION KI is setting the pace
for ‘AI Made in Germany’

MISSION KI is a joint project between acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). The research and development project is one of the flagship projects of the federal government’s digital strategy and is intended to strengthen the digital competitiveness of the German economy.

The initiative addresses the challenges of artificial intelligence on a broad front – by expanding the database for AI innovations and promoting the development and growth of trustworthy, marketable AI applications. In doing so, the project seeks to network and harmonise the large amount of promising research and development taking place in Germany and Europe. It is funded by the federal government with 32 million euros.

The initiative comprises three pillars:

PILLAR 1

Expanding the database for AI innovation

PILLAR  1

Expanding the database for AI innovation

By networking data spaces across sectors and national borders, the database for innovative AI applications can be expanded and digital competitiveness, especially that of German medium-sized businesses, can be strengthened.

This project, which encompasses both existing data spaces and those currently being established, will be expedited through collaboration with European and international standardisation initiatives such as the DSSC and EDIB, in order to ensure European connectivity.

PILLAR  2

Creating transparent AI quality and testing standards

PILLAR  2

Creating transparent AI quality and testing standards

We develop and trial AI testing methods, comprising criteria and tools, with the aim of ensuring the broad and scalable application of AI – with due regard to the EU’s AI Act, of course. We also aim to provide a voluntary AI seal of quality for AI applications, in accordance with German and European values, which will confirm compliance with uniform AI quality and testing standards and will strengthen German companies in international competition. For its implementation, we are establishing partnerships with leading players in the field of testing and standardization, such as TÜV, VDE and DEKRA. We will set up several AI quality and innovation centres to provide the environment necessary for testing and experimentation, while also offering opportunities for interaction with the general public.

PILLAR  3

Supporting the growth of AI innovations

PILLAR  3

Supporting the growth of AI innovations

We develop instruments to accelerate the transfer of robust AI research into practice and to promote the growth of outstanding AI innovations. To this end, we bring investors together with AI business founders and companies. In addition, we develop and trial a range of non-financial measures, such as AI fellowship programmes, to make it easier for scientists to start spin-offs.

Federal Minister for Digital and Transport
“I would like to strengthen the development of artificial intelligence in Germany. For that we need the sensible regulation of AI in Europe: openness to innovation instead of technology bans, as well as standards that are internationally compatible. In parallel, we need to create a better environment for digital innovation in our own country. We aim to contribute to this by supporting the development of high-quality AI products through the MISSION KI project. The slogan ‘AI made in Germany’ can offer a competitive advantage internationally if we make it easier for our domestic AI businesses to bring high-quality, secure, high-performance AI applications onto the market.”

MANFRED RAUHMEIER

Managing Director and board member of acatech
“MISSION KI aims to create the conditions and growth opportunities necessary for trustworthy and competitive AI ‘made in Germany’. The result must be usable, proportionate, and adaptable; it should promote an AI ecosystem of trust and excellence in Europe. Being a leader (in the area of regulation as well) means creating opportunities, taking risks, learning, and adapting rapidly. It is therefore important to establish a fair balance between innovation and regulation. For this, we are bringing together leading players such as the AI Quality & Testing Hub, CertifAI, Fraunhofer IAIS, PwC Germany, the TÜV AI Lab, and the VDE. Together they offer a comprehensive palette of expertise: Welcome aboard MISSION KI!”

JAN WÖRNER

President of acatech
“Germany and the European Union must achieve strategic sovereignty by strengthening security, resilience and sustainability to equal extents. To do this, we need an economically successful and socially useful digital transformation. Our continent has a strong research base, a diverse industrial sector and well-educated people with plenty of ideas. With the data spaces, we are creating an infrastructure for the fair exchange of data. We want to build on that. We want to foster trust and promote cooperation so that we can become faster in applying and scaling up new business models.”

Strengths in AI research - and then? With the National Initiative on Artificial Intelligence and the Data Economy, the German government wants to support the growth of trustworthy, marketable AI applications in Germany. Today, the initiative announced a consortium that is developing uniform AI quality standards as the basis for a voluntary German AI seal of quality. The decision was also made to establish AI centers in Berlin and Kaiserslautern. The national initiative is given a short name as a leverage project: "MISSION KI".
